One of my favorite things to do when I am in Maine is go to Fat Boy’s Drive In, in Brunswick. We’ve been eating here for as long as I can remember being alive, and the food is always the same- fresh and tasty.
I don’t know of many drive-ins that are around any more, so here is a step-by-step of the drive-in experience at Fat Boy’s. If you ever visit Maine, skip the touristy lobstah stands and don’t miss this place!
Step 1: Pull up to the building (this place has looked exactly the same since forever) and try to find a prime spot right under the awning in the shade. We went a little after lunch time on a week day, so getting this great spot was no problem.
Step 2: Turn on your lights for service. Remember to turn them off after your order.

Step 3 (not pictured): A wait-person comes up to your car and takes your order. I guess it’s okay if you need a menu first, but I’ve never actually seen a physical menu. I’m sure they must exist. You also have menus on the side of the building (see above) which haven’t changed since the 1950s. I highly suggest skipping the menu and going for a lobstah roll, onion rings, and a nice cold coke. A frappe is also a great way to end the meal, and you can order those when you are finished with your food. Mocha-add-banana is just wonderful.
Step 4: The food arrives and goes on a tray on the window. You pay (or in this case, my younger sister pays as she makes more money with her summer at Sears than I make as a grad student).
Step 5: Take the food off the tray. Don’t leave anything edible on the tray for too long as seagulls may swoop down and grab it. Straws, ketchup, napkins, salt etc. are all there. Roll up the window so you can use the AC while you eat (did I mention it is wicked hot?).

Step 6: Eat and enjoy!!! Put your lights on again when you’re finished, and don’t forget to order a frappe for the road.

HEAVEN.
omigod. you’re in Maine. eating a lobster roll. The envy knows no bounds.
I spy with my little eye… THREE drinks?
I like my banana shake with my food, and since I can’t stand mayo, I either get a grilled cheese with tomato or a grilled hot dog. Oh, W! You’ve made me want Fat Boy RIGHT NOW!
PS: What did you think of the new sign? The loss of the old one was a true tragedy.
Yes, the loss of the old sign is a tragedy– Fat Boy’s should not change in any way. I guess the old one fell down and broke (that’s what my sister told me). I think they could have at least found a new sign that was better than the one they have now!!
Sorry to make everyone so jealous!!
Wow, that looks freakin’ delicious. It took me a second to figure out why something that looks like that is called a lobster roll.
But now I get it. Cuz, like, it’s on a roll, right?
I am glad every one likes my grand parent’s restaurant! Keep on eating the food!
The sign fell and broke. It has to be that way to meet the states requirements’ and it can not be any bigger.
wow Kyra- that’s your grandparent’s restaurant!? Awesome! Obviously, I do love it tons.
And thanks for the info about the new sign– I’ll pass that on to everyone I know who was wondering what happened!
RIP old Fat Boy sign *sniff*
On a happier note I had Fat Boy yesterday, yup they’re opened for the season! It was surreal, eating at Fat Boy in the snow!
Kyra, tell your grandparents to keep up the good work! Been enjoying Fat Boy as long as I can remember
You sure can find out anything on the “net”. I moved down to Scarborough and with today’s great weather, am getting Spring fever and was wondering when Fat Boy’s was opening. Thanks, Sam, for letting me know they are already open.
I now know I’ll be taking a road trip this weekend for the most fabulous onion rings EVER!!! Actually, for the past 25+ years, it is always a BLT, onion rings, and a Mocha frappe!!!
