It turns out Jo and I missed paddle to work day! I didn't even know such a thing existed until I read about it this morning online. People left from Starkweather Creek very close to where we are at 6:30am, and expect it to take them about an hour to row to the capital area. [...]

weekend round-up
Posted in canoeing, dissertation on Sunday, April 23, 2006 | 2 Comments »
All and all this was a pretty satisfying weekend. Thursday both Jo and I bought a dozen eggs each on separate trips to the store, so Friday I made deviled eggs and we snacked on them all weekend. Saturday we spent a couple hours canoeing and taking part in the creek clean-up. As a result [...]
earth day clean-up

So, maybe my plan was to spend the day writing. I have a deadline tomorrow for a draft of my dissertation proposal and as of right now it is only in pieces from tearing it apart yesterday. But, I just heard from some paddlers going down the creek that today is the Friends of Starkweather [...]
lunch date

Well, my goodness. WordPress was down all day. But, that kept me working instead of blogging so it wasn't all that terrible. I did have a whole post planned out about our lunch yesterday, and now I don't feel up to conveying it the same way I had originally imagined. So you'll get an abbreviated [...]
paddling the day away

Did I mention how much we love living on the creek? We just really love it. Not only is being able to plop our canoe in the water any time we want wonderful, but we love the birds and ducks it brings to our backyard. We love how late in the day (like right now) [...]
semi-urban exploration

I am fascinated by urban exploration. When I lived in NY I was always drawn to the oldest details of the city- the oldest houses and taverns, the old subway trains and lines, the smooth cobblestone streets on the lower West side and the old houses found below West 4th St. I also love abandoned [...]

We went out paddling this morning, fortunately before it became so windy as right now everything outside is just blowing around. It was a wonderful early morning canoe trip- only about an hour- just enough to make me feel that spending the rest of the day inside at my desk is justified by some fresh [...]
a windy canoe trip

Yesterday we went out with the canoe again. We didn’t go very far as it was very windy. We were literally being blown all over the place. Obviously, canoeing with the wind was easier than against, so we did that for a little while and on the way back (fighting the wind the whole way) [...]
paddling=soreness

Our maiden voyage on the canoe was wonderful. We spent about an hour out there this morning and got the hang of it really very quickly. The creek is really beautiful. We went down a ways near Olbrich Gardens, but didn’t venture into the lake yet. Maybe next weekend.
But, now I am very sore. Not [...]
Have canoe, will paddle.

Yesterday Jo and I made a large and exciting purchase, courtesy of our tax refund from Uncle Sam! We got everything we needed to begin exploring the Madison waterways- paddles, life jackets and a dry bag (for the camera). We are going to have to re-organize our hall closet to make room for the canoe [...]
